Primary Years Spelling

Proficiency in spelling has a positive influence on overall writing competence, and general enjoyment and fluency in reading.  It is well established that spelling is an essential part of being a literate writer.  Becoming a writer is a complex endeavour that requires an understanding of a culturally distinctive sign system, and an application of this system in a way that has communicative intent.  While writing provides a means for intellectual inquiry and creative expression, it is facilitated by the successful application of the spelling, grammar and punctuation conventions, particular to the English language.
